The Story Behind the Piece

This gorgeous Early Victorian commode chair dates back to around 1850 and is one of those pieces that instantly catches your eye. I have searched online and genuinely struggled to find another with the same beautiful shape and details, making it feel even more special and unique.

I found the chair on Marketplace after it had been bought by a couple who had planned to restore it themselves. Over time the project became too overwhelming and was eventually left unfinished. When I collected it, the original wooden lid had been broken in half and badly repaired using rusty metal brackets, with other parts of the chair also held together in the same way.

I carefully removed all of the old metal repairs and restored the broken lid using dowels to rejoin the two original pieces properly. The side supports that hold the ceramic pot in place were also repaired so the chair is now structurally sound again. I have chosen not to strip away every mark and imperfection though, as I wanted to keep some of the age, wear, and story that give antique pieces their character.

The seat has new strapping and firm comfortable foam, then upholstered in a beautiful floral fabric with rich greens, soft pinks, and deep purples. It feels bold enough to make a statement while still being elegant and timeless.

Originally designed to be practical while looking like a standard armchair, commode chairs like this were common in Victorian homes but are becoming increasingly difficult to find today — especially with their original ceramic pot still intact.

This piece now works beautifully as a decorative chair in a bedroom, dressing room, hallway, or living space. A rare antique with history, personality, and a new lease of life ready to be enjoyed again.
